We are proud to announce the following distinguished speakers:
John Schuller – Director, Client Development, BrandProtect
Topic: “Incident Response in a Web 2.0 World… Are you ready?”:
- Review the progression of Internet risks over the past ten years… Identity theft (phishing, vishing, smishing, malware), to online trademark abuses, images, and video, to discussion or social media – how have these things evolved?
- Recent trends – threats still on the rise – social media
- Internet threats come in many forms… quickly share the connection between identity theft, brand abuse, and social media
- Point out – companies have invested so much into protecting their internal data with firewall protection and other technologies, but they invest very little in what happens to their brands outside the firewalls
- Quick review of the Internet Ecosystem – all the elements of the Internet that cause security professionals concern.
- Get everyone to start thinking about the big picture and who in a company owns possible losses or risks… Definable ROI vs. Soft ROI
- various business units who will likely have some involvement… not just a corporate security issue alone
- Steps to Internet protection: Search (detection, monitoring), Understand (analysis, reporting), Act (mitigation, response)
- Protecting Rights, Revenues, and Reputation
- What’s driving Web 2.0? – While there are growing threats, businesses are capitalizing on the opportunity social media presents and are reaping the rewards
- More to it than just “social media” marketing – opportunities for messaging & media, for advertising and promotions:
- Customer care
- Generating sales leads
- Help with recruitment
- Investor relations
- What are the risks?… reputation, identity theft, and public disclosure
- Response considerations… not black and white: consider the nature of the threat and the influence of the source
- Cover the use of social media monitoring tools/services and consider the potential responses
- Recommendations:
- Have a social media crisis team to deal with issues that arise
- Protect your brands by registering them across key social media sites
- Continually monitor and take action where applicable
- Develop in-house social media expertise
- Be transparent with intentions and your identity
- Coach and educate executives, staff, partners, and other third parties on social media policies
Dan Walters – Systems Engineer, FireEye
